Polyurethane spray regular or cedar on the outside?

My husband has four beautiful cedar Adirondack chairs. We want to preserve the cedar (not turns gray due to weather conditions). I think the spray polyurethane strips due to ample seating in the chair that would put him in a cloth or stiff brush. Never poly spray used by … I'm looking for someone who has used, preferably cedar, and can give a firsthand account of success. Any input / experience / advice would be appreciated.

It also works well as the use of a spray paint can spray light coats wait for it to dry between layers, 2 layers 3 layers better than a better 2 using the low humidity, etc.
