Finish Adirondack chair?

I just bought a new Adirondack chair appears to be unfinished raw oak. The furniture store you bought said While IR may paint or stain. How I can detect this chair? Is it as simple as going to HD or Lowe's and buy sand paper, stain. brushes .. and they have done? Am I missing something?
